Abstract

The general objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of microplastics on San Mateo Beach. A non-experimental mixed-type design was carried out with an exploratory approach, using systematic samples at five points along the beach, from which 100 sand samples were collected from five representative points of the beach, using a methodology adapted to coastal areas. The samples were analyzed using density separation techniques using the flotation technique and visual classification within a laboratory with the help of a stereomicroscope. The results indicated an average abundance of 12.5 ± 10.3 items/kg, with a predominance of fibers (63%), followed by fragments (25%) and plastic films (12%). This does not indicate that the main factor in the presence of microplastics is due to anthropogenic activities in the place, highlighting that it is one of the most visited sites, which is why it is of utmost importance to develop environmental management strategies.
